Couple shoot - Jersey

Most engagement shoots try too hard. Two people, posed against something scenic, instructed to "look natural," which, of course, is the one thing nobody can do on command. S&R wanted the opposite. An hour where the camera was almost incidental — a walk, a conversation, a few quiet stops along the way. So we crossed the river to New Jersey. There's a particular angle on New York City you can only get from the other side of the water. The skyline becomes a backdrop instead of a setting. Golden hour light falls sideways across the buildings — warm, long, generous — and the foreground belongs to the couple. For New Yorkers especially, a Jersey engagement shoot reframes the city they live in. It becomes scenery, not noise.

They came as they were. We walked, paused where the light was holding, and let them be a couple instead of subjects. Some frames are close — laughter mid-sentence, a hand on a sleeve. Others are wide — two small figures against the whole island of Manhattan. A documentary engagement session isn't about extracting "the shot." It's about giving a couple a low-pressure hour together and watching what happens. The pictures come from paying attention, not from directing. The result is a small set of images that look like the couple actually is — not a Pinterest version of them. They work for save-the-dates, of course, but the better frames end up framed in the apartment years later. They're the rare engagement photographs that age well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you photograph engagement sessions in New Jersey? Yes. Jersey City, Hoboken, Liberty State Park, and the surrounding waterfront are some of the strongest engagement locations in the New York metro area, particularly for couples who want the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

Why do New York couples shoot engagement photos in New Jersey? The view of Manhattan from the New Jersey side is unmatched for portraits. Golden hour light hits the skyline at an angle that's impossible to capture from within the city itself. The waterfront is also significantly quieter and less crowded than the equivalent locations in Manhattan.

What time of day is best for a Jersey City engagement shoot? The hour before sunset. Golden light on the Manhattan skyline is the entire point. Sessions typically start 75–90 minutes before sundown, depending on the season and the specific location.

What should we wear for an engagement session? Whatever you actually feel like, in yourself. I avoid heavy color coordination and matching outfits — the point of a documentary session is to look like you, not like a styled couple. I'm happy to advise on tones that work with the location's light.

How long is an engagement session? Most run 60 to 90 minutes. Long enough to settle in. Short enough that nothing feels like a production.

Do you also photograph engagement sessions in Manhattan and Brooklyn? Yes. I shoot engagement sessions across the New York metro area — including the West Village, DUMBO, Central Park, Brooklyn Heights, and select destination sessions. Jersey is one strong option among several, chosen based on the couple and the look they want.
